Shaping the Future of WEEE at the VI Congreso de RAEE

Last month, AIMEN, RECYCLIA, and REVERTIA participated in the 6th National Congress on Waste Management of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RAEE), held in Cordoba on October 3rd and 4th. This marked the third consecutive year of participation for Circular TwAIn and the three organisations, showcasing our ongoing commitment to advancing sustainable practices and innovation in the sector.

This landmark event brought together the key players across the WEEE value chain in Spain, including policymakers, manufacturers, waste managers, treatment plants and researchers, to discuss the challenges and innovations shaping the industry. The two-day congress, regarded as a cornerstone for advancing WEEE management in Spain, featured interactive talks, engaging roundtables, and networking opportunities. Attendees gained valuable insights into the evolving landscape of the circular economy and sustainable practices.

Policymakers from local, national, and European levels shared their visions and strategies for WEEE management, and updates on new policies and legislation. Notably, Raquel Gomez, Sub-Director General of Circular Economy at the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, introduced a new procedure for coordinating agents of the WEEE value chain. This initiative aims to streamline operations and enhance stakeholder collaboration, significantly impacting Spain's recycling industry. Other sessions dealt with the forthcoming WEEE regulation and the main challenges to adopting the circular economy approach along the value chain. Pau Garcia's presentation emphasised the benefits and limitations of AI and advanced technologies in WEEE management.

The event highlights included the Circular TwAIn WEEE demonstration video, showcased at a dedicated stand. The presentation attracted considerable interest among attendees during the networking breaks.

Finally, the congress underscored the need for digitalisation and automation in stakeholder facilities, but also the importance of social awareness, technology understanding, and collaboration between technology providers and stakeholders to foster the adoption of new technologies.

The National WEEE Congress is essential for Spain’s transition to a circular economy, enabling stakeholders to align their efforts with local, national, and European sustainability goals. This year’s edition reflected growing urgency around waste reduction, resource recovery, and compliance with ambitious EU environmental standards.
